Liquors
When ordering a drink one must be
cognizant not only of the whiskey that it is under reliable kosher supervision. There are
many other ingredients that may be added into the drink that may affect the kosher status.
Therefore one should be aquatinted with the ingredients in the various drinks, especially
if it is a new drink that one may want to try without finding out in advance the
ingredients being used by the one mixing the drink. We will list some common drinks &
some of the possible kosher concerns. While some drinks may be common in one area they may
be less common in another area. Some drinks may be called by various different names. Alexander-may
have brandy & cream. Brandy which is a wine product & cream may be dairy. Bacardi
cocktail- does contain rum, requires kosher supervision. B&B- may contain
brandy. Black Russian- may contain Kahlua, which used to have kosher supervision
but does not any more. Black Velvet- may contain champagne, which is a wine. Bloody
Mary- the tomato juice requires kosher supervision; the Worcestershire sauce may
contain fish. Bronx Cocktail-has vermouth, a wine product. Bullshot- the
consommé may be meat derived. Champagne Cocktail- has brandy & champagne, both
wine products. Rum & Coke- has rum in it. Daiquiri- has rum in it. Gibson-contains
vermouth in it. Gimlet, Gin & Tonic & Gin Fizz- is gin &
lime. Grasshopper- the cream may be dairy. Kir- contains wine. Mai Tai-
has rum. Manhattan- contains vermouth. Margarita- contains tequila, may be
worm tequila. Martini- Contains gin & vermouth. Pina Colada- contains
dark rum. Planters Punch- Contains rum. Rickey- may contain a variety of
spirits. Rob Roy- may contain vermouth. Sangre- may contain Tequila worm
& Bloody Mary ingredients. Sidecar- contains brandy. Singapore Sling-
contains brandy. Stinger- contains brandy, & the cream may be dairy. Tequila
Sunrise- may contain worm tequila. Toddy- may contain brandy, rum etc. White
Lady- the cream may be dairy. There are many different drinks that we did not list,
but the above list will be a clue of some of the different ingredients in mixed drinks.
All whiskies, liquors etc require kosher supervision. Whiskies and liquors besides the
origin of the raw ingredient, there may be additives. The addition of flavors &
glycerin is common, and they would require a reliable kosher supervision. |
